We are looking for our first Artists in our brand new artist residency in Istanbul.
SEPTEMBER 15th - 30t h
We provide shared and private ateliers, accommodation, food, exhibition and a great network of local artists.

The artistic community in Istanbul should be stimulated to practice a more socially relevant art and the aim could be to involve people who are not usually participating.

YeldeÄŸirmeni is going through an urban transformation and locals and artists are living together. This old and new way of life might bring some artistic opportunities.

ABOUT PROGRAMME
WERKSTATT AKADEMIE ISTANBUL is an international art program designed to bring talented artists, creative practitioners, researchers and writers from around the world to experience a unique cultural environment dedicated to art. Selected artists are invited to live and work in specially designed studio for a period up to 1 month. By bringing the creators of art in a unique setting the Program aims to situate art at the very heart of historical Istanbul.

WHO CAN APPLY
Art studio is open year-round, providing ARTISTS/WRITERS /CURATORS / CREATIVE PRACTITIONERS/ RESEARCHERS/SCHOLARS/THINKERS/PHOTOGRAPHERS with much-needed space and time to work on a project of their choice. The applications are reviewed by an art committee whose efforts ensure that a broad range of artistic disciplines, styles are represented. The selection process aims to integrate artists and researchers in a spirit of openness and curiosity about creativity in its diverse forms and contexts and local art scene.

WHAT WE OFFER
Residency in a private air-conditioned furnished room in a historical small city campus built in 1903 and renovated recently. It has high ceilings, large windows in two directions. Our campus is in the heart of Istanbul’s art scene.
Shared studios are equipped with easels, stool, ample wall space, both natural and artificial lighting and a small library. The space is filled with original art. Complimentary pick-up and drop-off for arrival and departure, private Belgrade City tour on request, a studio representative always on hand to help out and lots more. You are right at the centre of Istanbul in an ispiring building where you can meet local art artists, art lovers and local & international people.

FEES
Each resident is responsible for their own funding. Please note that there is only two artists at a time in the residency. Every participant can bring along one family member or partner that will pay 50% of the price as well as a pet, free of charge.

Expectations towards the artist
Exhibition opportunities/artist talk/studio visits. We respect that not all artists will want to host studio visits and/or show what they have produced therefore this is handled on an individual basis. If you have specific requests please feel free to include it in your project proposal.

Who can apply?
Residency is open to all emerging and established artists, curators and researchers over the age of 18 with no limitation on artistic discipline.
Please note:

Artists may apply throughout the calendar year.

â– Participants are expected to be able to communicate effectively in English.
â– Due to the historic nature of our facilities, we regret that WERKSTATT is not handicapped accessible at the present time.
â– Every participant can bring along one family member or partner that will pay the second person fee, as well as a pet, free of charge.
Applications are reviewed by an art committee according to the following criteria:
â– Clarity of artistic vision as articulated in the artist statement and work samples
â– Persuasive evidence that the applicant is committed in purpose and practice
â– Clear evidence that the artist works at a professional level in his/her field
â– Willingness to work in a dynamic environment that encourages interaction with the community
To enrich the artist’s experience, it is expected that each resident will use every available opportunity, to build community and friendship, and to exchange ideas and experiences.
â– Work and living space must be properly maintained and left in the same condition in which it was found.
â– It is expected that each participant will conduct his or herself with a high level of professionalism while in residence.
â– All equipment and materials are the responsibility of the artist.
â– There is a fee for any overnight guests, based on availability. Prior approval is required.
We have coffee and lounge area in the campus. We have an open air stage where exhibitions and events may take place during your visits. We have students all ages in the campus during daytime. For all your needs during your stay in the city, we offer front desk services.
FELLOWSHIP
We will offer one fellowship per year to artists and creatives of outstanding talent in 2024. A fellowship covers the full cost for a week. (travel not included).
We also offer residency in the neighbourhoods so group visits are also possible. Please contact for more information if you would like to visit with 3 or more artists.
FUNDING GUIDE
WERKSTATT is a for-profit institution organized by artists for artists. All participants are expected to make some financial contribution to their experience. To cover the participation costs for the residence program we advice you to get funding.
